Gestalt Language Processing
If your child communicates through scripts, echolalia, or repeated phrases, you may have been told it's something to correct or ignore. We'd like to offer a different perspective and one backed by research and rooted in deep respect for how your child is actually communicating.
The following Speech-Language Pathologists at Bringing Therapy Home are trained in Natural Language Acquisition and the Gestalt Language Processing framework: Marena Mitchell, Kate Greenleaf, Sarah Rittermeyer, and Emma Heinen.
What is Gestalt Language Processing?
Gestalt Language Processing, also called Natural Language Acquisition, is an evidence-based, natural way that many children develop language. Rather than building language word by word, Gestalt Language Processors start by absorbing whole phrases, sentences, or chunks of language that carry an overall feeling or meaning. These are called "gestalts." You may know them as scripting or echolalia.
Scripting and echolalia should be honored and supported. They are the foundation of your child's language development.
Research from Dr. Barry Prizant, Ph.D., CCC-SLP and the clinical work of Marge Blanc, M.A., CCC-SLP has shown that echolalia is meaningful and purposeful — a natural stage in how some children acquire language. Autistic Speech-Language Pathologist Rachel Dorsey further explains that Gestalt Language Processors assign feeling and meaning to whole phrases first, then gradually break them down into smaller, more flexible pieces of language over time.
The Six Stages of Gestalt Language Development
Just like all language development, Gestalt Language Processing follows a natural progression with distinct milestones:
Stage 1: Delayed echolalia (repeating whole phrases heard before)
Stage 2: Mitigations (mixing delayed echolalia with spontaneous words)
Stage 3: Isolation of single words from previously used phrases
Stage 4: Novel language beginning to emerge, with some grammatical errors
Stages 5 & 6: Fully flexible, self-generated language with advanced grammar
Every child moves through these stages at their own pace.
How We Support Gestalt Language Processors at Bringing Therapy Home
Our approach is play-based, sensory-rich, and always child-led. Our Natural Language Acquisition trained Speech-Language Pathologists are specifically trained to:
Collect language samples to identify exactly where your child is in their development
Determine which stage of Gestalt Language Development your child is currently in
Affirm and help uncover the meaning behind your child's scripts
Model a wide variety of communication functions
Provide access to robust, meaningful communication
Use evidence-based strategies to support progression through all six stages
We also work closely with families because the strategies that support your child here need to carry over at home, at school, and everywhere in between.
