One of my favorite phonemic awareness skills is the ability to rhyme . Before kids will be able to generate a rhyme, they need to recognize rhyming words by hearing rhyming words around them. Have fun with rhyming during your daily routines. For example, as you are looking for a bowl in the cabinet, you could say, “I’m looking for a bowl. A lowl. A zowl. A kowl. No, no, It’s a bowl.” Your child will probably laugh and enjoy hearing you create new words. Ask them, “What should I look for?” As soon as they name something, start the game again. “I’m looking for a book. A sook. A look. A nook. No, no, I’m looking for a book.” Channel your inner Dr. Seuss. Every kid I’ve ever done this with has absolutely loved it (this is the game I play to keep my own 2
year-old entertained in the car).
